Dog ownership is associated with lower overall and cardiovascular mortality, although this is an observational association that probably reflects in part that people who own a dog walk more and show a better health profile, rather than an established causal effect. The certainty of the evidence for the critical outcomes is very low. This is why the recommendation is conditional in favor, because the balance between benefits and harms is favorable, albeit with lower certainty.

Before intervening on social connection, consider the person's preferences, autonomy, and context, and individualize the approach while respecting their decisions. Pay attention to situations such as severe isolation, grief, and psychosocial risk that require more intensive support. Advise seeking professional care in the presence of warning signs regarding the person's mood and safety, and refer to psychosocial support and, where appropriate, mental health care when the situation requires it. Reassess the course periodically.
